Esquao Leadership Development Program
Encouraging more Indigenous Women to become leaders
Although Indigenous women have accomplished a great deal, IAAW recognized that an important part of community success is building new community leaders. The Esquao Leadership Development Program was developed to expand on the previous great work done by the IAAW. Therefore, in an effort to increase communication skills and improve opportunities for Indigenous women to become involved in a leadership role, our mandate is to:
• Increase the participation of Indigenous women in their communities through mentorship, training, and intergenerational exchange
• Prepare women for future leadership roles in their communities, or for participation in leadership activities such as serving on boards and committees
• Build confidence and foresight for young Indigenous women to utilize their leadership capabilities in partnered community service activities.
Program focuses on building knowledge through sharing the experiences of participants and regular leadership activities to build skills. This includes increasing awareness about the issues affecting the Indigenous community, opportunities available to become involved in local community activities and with the various Indigenous community project partners.
